The Shire Valley Standard:
A Legacy of Excellence

At Shire Valley we hold the highest standards of expectations when breeding and raising our horses. We invite you to learn more about our standards below.

A World-Class Standard

At Shire Valley Horses, we have a saying: We may not be the world’s largest or the world’s most famous horse breeding farm, but we are by far one of the best. To us, "world-class" isn't a title you buy; it is a standard you live by every single day, starting with elite bloodlines and ending with a horse that is as emotionally sound as it is physically magnificent.

The Royalty of the Range

What truly sets us apart is how we view our breeding stock. From the moment of conception, a mare is treated like royalty. For eleven months, she isn't just a "foal"—she is monitored, exercised, and cherished.

While many facilities rely on stalls, our horses are born for the open air. Except in cases of injury or sickness, they are never stalled. Our mares roam across 70 acres of pristine pasture, living the life nature intended.

“Even on the coldest Wyoming days, while they have their shelters, you will find them standing out in their glory in the wind and snow.”

As cold-bloods, Shire Draft Horses have a slower metabolism and a biological resilience that is nothing short of miraculous. Science shows they can handle temperatures as low as -80°F. While they thrive in the frost, we are equally protective of them in the heat, providing irrigated fields and deep shelter to escape the scorching summer sun.

Building the Bond:
The “Spa Day” Philosophy

A Shire Valley horse is world-class because of its mind. From day one, our foals are handled with a blend of discipline and deep affection. We don't just "train" them we build a relationship.

Our daily routine with foals includes:

  • Desensitization: Picking up all four feet, rubbing them all over, and introducing a rope to the mouth to normalize future bits.

  • Affection: Our "training" involves lots of hugs, soft kisses, and quiet conversation. By day three, most foals will follow a handler like a shadow.

  • The "Spa Day": By six months, our foals are so trusting that they view blankets, lightweight saddles, and ropes around their legs as a relaxing spa treatment rather than a threat.

The 175-Pound Miracle:
Our Foaling Protocol

When a mare is two months away from her due date, Shire Valley enters "High Alert"; We combine old-world intuition with modern technology, using 24/7 barn cameras to watch over every paddock and stall.

Because a Shire foal can weigh up to 175lbs at birth, the physical stakes are high. We ensure
that at least two attendants are present for nearly every birth. We believe in letting nature lead the way, but we never leave health to chance:

  • The Golden Hour: We milk the mare as soon as she stands to ensure the foal receives its first colostrum via bottle or tube within the first hour.

  • Scientific Certainty: At 12–16 hours old, we perform a blood test to check IGG levels, ensuring the foal’s immune system is fully armed and utilizing that liquid gold colostrum.

  • The Transition: After a 24–48 hour bonding period in the foaling stall, they are slowly transitioned back to the herd, small grassy paddocks then building up to reaching full pasture by three months.

The Luxury of Time

In an industry that often rushes to wean and sell, Shire Valley takes the slow road. Most breeders wean at six months; we wait until 12–18 months, letting the mother decide when the time is right. We have found that this patience produces a much calmer, more confident horse.

Furthermore, we are in no hurry to say goodbye. We prefer to keep our foals until they are at least two years old. This allows us to truly understand their temperament and witness their full physical confirmation before they head to their forever homes. At Shire Valley, we aren't just breeding horses; we are stewards of a legendary breed, ensuring that every giant we bring into this world is prepared to be a partner for life.
